Bridge Kids International Launches Its
First Bridge Kids Builds Project –
A Sustainable Community Complex
in Saint-Louis, Senegal

Bridge Kids International is proud to announce its first Bridge Kids Builds project – a pilot house in the community of Diougoup, in the Saint-Louis region of Senegal. The pilot house will serve as the African headquarters of Bridge Kids International and will be part of our first Sustainable Community Complex. The complexes will be designed to improve the quality of life for local residents, promote economic and environmental sustainability, and support youth employment and entrepreneurship.

The building project will contribute to the long term economic health of Saint-Louis by providing environmentally sustainable housing and community facilities, bringing services to improve the quality of life in Saint-Louis, and employing young people in the area. Additionally, the project will provide a source of income for Bridge Kids International, enabling the organization to rely on its own resources to support its programs. By utilizing “green building” strategies, the project will also show how innovative environmentally friendly construction can be successful in Saint-Louis, paving the way for similar projects in the region.

It's Official! Bridge Kids International and Université Gaston Berger Sign Partnership Agreement

In July 2011, Bridge Kids International and Université Gaston Berger (UGB) in Saint-Louis, Senegal signed a formal Memorandum of Agreement. Founded in 1990, UGB is the second largest public university in Senegal and prides itself on its quality of education, the selectivity of its students, and its commitment to innovation. Rector Pr. Mary Teuw Niane and Pr. Omar Sougou from UGB and Stacy Bailey-Ndiaye, Nafi Diagne Ba, Bamba Ndiaye and Moussa Seck from Bridge Kids worked together to facilitate the agreement. UGB faculty and staff have been major supporters of Bridge Kids. The BK Senegal Group is housed at UGB and the university hosted the 2010 Bridge Kids International Camp. Members of the UGB community have provided leadership, guidance and financial support to Bridge Kids and it is fitting that we have formalized our relationship.

The two entities have agreed to partner on activities that promote youth and community development, especially in the areas of economic development, education, the environment, girls' rights and health. Our first joint effort will be a Bridge Kids Builds project creating “green” graduate student housing, particularly for those with families and international students. A unique green space will be designed to celebrate the natural beauty of Saint-Louis, attracting local residents and tourists to enjoy the campus environment. Stay tuned for more exciting news from Bridge Kids and UGB!

Bridge Kids Celebrates the Day of the African Child

On June 16, 2011, Bridge Kids returned to our roots and celebrated The Day of the African Child. Partnering with Plan Saint-Louis, Bridge Kids joined with community organizations, NGOs, government officials and young people in Saint-Louis, Senegal, to highlight the plight of street children. Bridge Kids was well represented by board members Stacy Bailey-Ndiaye, Nafi Diagne Ba, and Bamba Ndiaye , members of BK Senegal and BK Louisville, USA and children from BK Senegal's “English Teaching Program” and ” Jappalè Ndongo Daara.” Bridge Kids Senegal's project, “Jappalè Ndongo Daara” provides an academic education to “talibes” who too often beg in the streets while they are getting their religious education. Nafi and Bamba spoke on behalf of BK and the celebration proved to be an wonderful opportunity to showcase our organization and the excellent work going on in Senegal. Many thanks to Plan Saint-Louis which has always been a great partner and friend to Bridge Kids.

Thanks EDUN LIVE!
Bridge Kids International sends a big shout out to EDUN LIVE in Ireland! Thanks so much for sponsoring the International Videoconference for the Day of the African Child by donating 100% organic cotton t-shirts in Uganda for the first official Bridge Kids t-shirt.

EDUN LIVE is part of the socially conscious clothing company, EDUN, with was launched in Spring 2005 by Ali Hewson and Bono. EDUN is a for-profit business founded on the premise of trade, not aid as a means of building sustainable communities. The company's mission is to drive sustainable employment in sub-Saharan Africa through high-volume sales of blank t-shirts and organic t-shirts to the promotional products and merchandise industry. The blank t-shirts, from the African cotton they source, to the spinning and knitting process, all the way to the manufacturer, are 100% African, or as they say, "grow-to-sew" African.

Bridge Kids appreciates the way EDUN LIVE's ethical business practices support the self-determination of people of Africa. Their mission is certainly linked to ours and we hope to do business with EDUN LIVE in the future. Thanks, EDUN LIVE, for your support!

"And I am particularly speaking to the young people all across Africa and right here in Ghana. In places like Ghana, young people make up over half of the population. And here is what you must know: The world will be what you make of it. You have the power to hold your leaders accountable, and to build institutions that serve the people. You can serve in your communities, and harness your energy and education to create new wealth and build new connections to the world. You can conquer disease, and end conflicts, and make change from the bottom up. You can do that. Yes you can -- (applause) -- because in this moment, history is on the move." - US President Barack Obama speaking in Ghana, July 11, 2009

Amadou

Participant in 2005 Bridge Kids Camp

"In general, all members of the group were very open-minded. I have always dreamt of contributing somehow in fighting poverty. I loved the games and discussions with the children, who were so adorable and innocent. I also loved playing football with them.  This humanitarian work left me with memories I will carry with me forever. I feel like establishing a group of this kind to help children and women in difficulty".

SuperNova Bridge Kids Group Youth Leader, Clarendon, Jamaica

"I feel empowered and successful when I am being uplifted while lifting up the people around me. This philosophy has led me to be involved in many things, but most importantly to have created the SuperNova Program and to now partake in Bridge Kids International. This opportunity to participate will help me to learn more about others and their cultures as well as open the eyes of my students in Jamaica who are continuously trying to learn more about the world around them. Oftentimes people forget that volunteering is more than just giving time to others – it's about doing it with passion and dedication. I chose to become a part of Bridge Kids because I feel they too know what it means to volunteer with dedication.  This connection will help my SuperNova group and me to be even more committed to the true betterment of our community and ourselves."
